How Should Women Pursue Knowledge?

Shaykh Saalih al-Usaymi حفظه الله suggests that a woman seeking knowledge should first focus on matters directly relevant to her, as this clarity is essential for her worship of Allah. This guidance is beneficial for all women, as these issues often form the basis of their inquiries.

Ahkaam anNisaa encompasses a broad range of issues, delving deeper than many women realize, covering topics such as menstruation, worship, marriage, divorce, beautification and many more.

This approach is a matter of methodology and should not be misconstrued to discourage women from specializing in different fields of Islamic sciences. His guidance simply emphasizes prioritization and adherence to what is best. Therefore, once a woman has grasped the foundational aspects of her religion and understands the matters specific to her, she is encouraged to delve into the various branches of Islamic sciences.

Why Gate Thirteen?
The name Gate 13 is a reference to the women’s western entrance of Masjid Nabawi in Madinah. Within these gates the sound of ‘ilm echoes from corner to corner. The bustling of the circles of Quran and mutōon memorization, classes of the Ma’ahad and Kulliyah, and the live lectures of the ‘ulamaa of Madinah playing on the loudspeakers. Gate 13 is a symbol of ṭalab al-ʿilm being alive and well for the Muslim women and a standard that should be emulated worldwide.

This blog was created to be a space for women to benefit and seek knowledge on the issues that concern them the most. Gate 13 is an effort to connect classical Islamic academia to the English speaking world all while being accessible and user friendly.
